A Joyful Festival of Song and Dances. (2)

September 11, 2008

I’m going to be attending this little concert at Rancho Cucamonga this Sunday (the daughter of one of my dad’s college classmates @ Ateneo is part of the main bill), so if you’re looking for something to do….let’s see how this goes.

Event Details

A Joyful Festival of Song and Dances

Sister Act: A Joyful Festival of Song and Dances

Directed by Vic Perez

The show will feature two very young gifted multi-awarded singers: Shanelle Joaquin and Nicole Villalon.
Both artists have gathered almost all the plum prizes for most of the singing competitions held in Southern California for young singers.
They have been conferred with so many titles that at a very young age, both artists are ready to take center stage and take the challenge of doing their very own concert after supporting big Filipino artists in major theatres.
These two artists will sing pop, ballad, and inspirational songs that will amuse and entertain the general public. This two hour show will also have diverse production numbers which will be a hodgepodge of song and dances. The guest is a famous Filipino artist who has been in the top three finalist of 2003 American Idol contest-Jasmine Trias. Nikki and Shanelle will be supported by 15 amateur singers and dancers who will comprise the whole production.
The show will have a very youthful energy as most of the performers will be young children and teenagers who have won and excelled in various young artists competition.
The director of the show is Vic Perez who has handled big Filipino American concerts in many states- San Francisco, Chicago, New Jersey, and Washington DC. He has line produced and directed Filipino celebrities such as Sharon Cuneta, Martin Nievera, Lani Misalucha, RegineVelasquez in various concert venues such as the Los Angeles Sports Arena, The Pasadena Civic Auditorium, The Orpheum Theatre, The Shrine, among others.

Pinoy Visions (9/6) and FPAC (9/9 - 9/10)

September 5, 2006

As part of the upcoming Festival of Philippine Arts & Culture on Sep. 9-10, the Association for the Advancement of Filipino Arts and Culture, Inc. is presenting the 13th edition of PINOY VISIONS, showcasing the best upcoming Pinoy filmmaking talents since 1994.

It’s being held this week in various events leading up to FPAC, and Troy Phi is planning an outing to the third part of Pinoy Visions, which will be at the David Henry Hwang Theatre in Downtown LA from 7:30p-9p. It’s a great way to see firsthand new, unique perspectives in film from Filipino and Filipino-American directors.

Among the film shorts and music videos shown that night are both Bebot videos from the Black Eyed Peas. There will also be documentaries (ex. The Debutantes of Orange County), narratives (ex. Sikyu and Grandma’s Recipe), and some animation (Sabong Spell) as well. For the full list of films, please visit the following website: http://vconline.org/pinoyvisions06/daythree.html

General admission is $8. Rides can be arranged if necessary. If you want to go, email Celeste and me at culture@troyphi.com as soon as possible.

Also, a reminder that FPAC is coming up, and we’re having a bus taking people there on Sunday the 10th…please email me if you’re going to that too. Riding on the bus is free, $3 for admission to FPAC ($5 for a two-day pass).

cultural events (6.10-6.15)

June 9, 2006

1. “Care Home” Screening (6.10)

NORA AUNOR’S FILM SCREENING ON JUNE 10

In line with the Philippine Independence Celebration for the month of
June, GGS Entertainment proudly presents a special screening of the
movie “Care Home” starring the legendary superstar Ms. Nora Aunpr,
Queen of the Visayan Movies Gloria Sevilla, Rebecca Quintana and Divina
Valencia on Saturday, June 10, 2006 at 6:30 P.M. at the Glendale Central
Library Auditorium located at 222 E. Harvard Street Glendale, CA 91205.
Tickets available at the gate or for more information please call (818)
915-3558 and (818) 240-8397.

“Care Home,”directed by Suzett Ranillo, promises not only to
entertain but to provide a look into the plight of the Filipino
caregivers in the United States. Opposed to the Filipino cultural norm
that frowns upon those who seek outside facilities to care for their
elderly, this movie presents a different mind set whereby adult Filipino
children are encouraged to allow a facility to provide quality care for
their aging parents.

After a successful screening in San Francisco, this movie promises to
touch the hearts of the people of Los Angeles who choose to see it. For
a peek at the movie’s outtakes and film gallery, you may visit their
website at www.carehomethemovie.com

All Power To The People
KmB

Los Angeles/Bay Area, CA- Acclaimed revolutionary Pinoy hip hop group Native Guns are proud to announce the long-awaited, highly anticipated release of their debut album, “Barrel Men.”

An urban tribal masterpiece-”Barrel Men” reflects the life, times, and mission of these “two bald-headed brown brothas with tattoos.” MCs Kiwi and Bambu both grew up in inner-city Los Angeles districts in which gang culture was a part of their youth. Building names for themselves separately in L.A.’s busy underground hip hop scene, they were united through the same love and passion to improve their community. Both credit hip hop for providing an alternative to gang life and sparking their social consciousness.

With production from DJ Rhettmatic (World Famous Beat Junkies, Visionaries), Sabzi (Blue Scholars), ASI and others, the Native Guns combine music with critical thought, covering topics ranging from third world sweatshop labor (”Work It”) to self-criticism (”Look in the Mirror”). Spitting knowledge doesn’t have to be boring: the Guns prove this with their head-nodding anthem “Champion,” the first single from the album. Another song that is sure to get crowds jumping is the track “Hammer,” which is a bouncing call-to-arms for their fellow youth from the hood. “1995″ has Kiwi and Bambu reminiscing about the feel-good innocent days of discovering hip-hop, while “Kombat” provides a scathing critique of today’s mainstream rap industry.

“Barrel Men” represents a fresh perspective for hip hop, embodying the bridge between art and activism. In this tradition of socially conscious music, this album will certainly be an important contribution, both in the classroom and on the street corner.

cavite — film screening on may 26th (7:30p)

May 15, 2006

During the next 2 months there will be film screenings of a new Filipino-American independent film called Cavite.

Here’s an excerpt from an email forwarded to me by Eloisa Gomez Borah, who in turn got it from one Vincent Nebrida:

“…Winner of the 2006 Independent Spirit’s “Someone to Watch” Award and recently screened as an official selection at the prestigious New Directors/ New Films Festival, CAVITE is a heart-pounding suspense thriller and the screen debut of filmmakers Neill Dela Llana and Ian Gamazon. The film follows Adam (Ian Gamazon), a young Filipino American living in San Diego, back to his native country for his father’s funeral. Upon his arrival at the airport, the purpose of his visit becomes radically different. An anonymous cell phone call by an unseen Muslim extremist who has kidnapped his mother and sister forces him to undertake a torturous journey to save their lives.

As Adam carries out a series of seemingly random errands ordered by the omniscient voice, he is led through the slums of modern-day Manila and the back alleys of the nearby city of Cavite. Here, the returning expatriate is forced to participate in activities, and bravely faces the challenge of examining his own culture and conscience.

ACCLAIM FOR “CAVITE”:

“Ingenious….Among the most striking American independent films of the year!”–The New York Times

“A thriller that’s fresh and compelling to the end.” — Los Angeles Times

“A taut, stylish, minimalist thriller.” — New York Post

“Brilliantly resourceful. Sensational camerawork…a landmark in diaspora cinema.” –Village Voice

OPENING DATES/ THEATERS:

…So I’m planning a TP outing on May 26th @ the Santa Monica Nuart for anyone that wants to see this movie. Email me at raymond@troyphi.com if you want to go, or leave a comment here.
